Mustang Scout Skills Campout

April 16, 17 & 18, 2004

 

Location:                       Cliff Illig’s Farm, southeast of LaCygne, Kansas

 

Activities & Schedule:      There will be several different activities this weekend.  Some designed for our Mustang Patrol Scouts (Scouts that have just joined Troop 10).  Other activities designed for the rest of the Troop 10 Scouts.  We should be returning Sunday at about 10:30am after a Chapel Service. If you plan to arrive late, leave early or leave during the campout, you MUST contact our Scoutmaster, Bill Haner, before the campout (by Thursday, April 15th) or you may not get credit for the campout.

          Mustang Patrol Scouts: (Saturday & Sunday)

Ø      Meet at Prairie Star Middle School at 7:30am, Saturday April 17th 

Ø      Depart PSMS at 8:00am SHARP !!!

Ø      Arrive at Illig’s Farm; Set-up Camp

Ø      Work on Scout Skills & early Rank Advancement.

Ø      Work on cooking Skills  (see below)

Ø      Attend & witness Order of the Arrow Ceremony

Ø      Crackerbarrel Saturday night

 

          All Other Troop 10 Scouts: (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)

Ø      Leave for Illig’s Farm as early as possible Friday, April 16th

Ø      Arrive at Illig’s Farm; Set up Camp, Patrol Lashing Project

Ø      OA Members, Practice Ceremony & Construct Campfires

Ø      ALL OA Members; Perform Tapout Ceremony

Ø      Non OA Members; Attend OA Tapout Ceremony

Ø      Crackerbarrel Saturday Evening

 

          Other Activities:

Ø      Fishing Derby in Mr. Illig’s well stocked Lakes

§                     Bring fishing gear

§                     May work on Fishing Merit Badge

Ø      Orienteering Course (For Mustang Rank Advancement)

§                     Bring compass

 

Food/Cooking Format: 

·           Friday Supper: – Eat before you arrive. 

·           Saturday Breakfast:

Ø                  Patrols plan and prepare a Hot Breakfast

Ø                  Mustang Scouts & Parents eat before you meet at the school

Ø                  Adults & SPL Staff will cook & eat as the “Old Goat” Patrol.

·           Saturday Lunch – Everyone bring a Sack Lunch. 

·           Saturday Supper:

Ø                  Patrols plan and prepare a Hot Supper  (Patrols need to bring charcoal)

Ø                  Mustang Scouts will prepare a Hot Supper – the food will be provided

Ø                  Adults & SPL Staff will cook & eat as the “Old Goat” Patrol.

·           Sunday Breakfast:

Ø                  Patrols plan and prepare a Hot Breakfast

Ø                  Mustang Scouts will prepare a Hot Breakfast – the food will be provided

Ø                  Adults & SPL Staff will cook & eat as the “Old Goat” Patrol.

 

Troop Policy: NO Lighter Fluid, “Match-light”, or accelerant to be used.

Charcoal chimneys are provided by the Troop

 

 

Equipment Needed: (There is no specific Uniform of the day – Class “A” at the campfire)

          Mustang Patrol Scouts: (consult your Scout Handbook for a complete list)

Ø      Cold/Cool weather clothing, extra dry clothing to change into at night

Ø      (socks, sweats, t-shirts, stocking hat, gloves, etc.)

Ø      Sturdy Boots or shoes & extra pair shoes.

Ø      Sleeping Bag – cold weather, Ground Mat

Ø      Mess Kit (bowl, plate, insulated cup, knife, fork, spoon)

(These are not provided by the Troop)

Ø      Rain Gear

Ø      Canteen or water bottle

Ø      Compass

Ø      Fishing Gear

Ø      Tents & ground cloth if you took one home last month

(The Troop does not provide tents for Adults)

Ø      SCOUT HANDBOOK (pen)

Ø      CLASS “A” Uniform Shirt for Saturday Night Ceremony

 

          All Other Troop 10 Scouts:

Ø      Same equipment as above

Ø      Fishing Gear

Ø      Patrol tents & tarps (check to make sure ALL parts are present)

Ø      Patrol Cook Boxes (cleaned & stocked)

Ø      Food for all meals

Ø      OA Members need to bring tribal attire if you have it.

Ø      OA Members – Remember to bring your Sash.

Ø      CLASS “A” Uniform Shirt for Saturday Night Ceremony if not in tribal attire.

 

Patrols need to work together to make sure that patrol tents and cooking boxes are brought to camp by assigned patrol members.  If you have Patrol Equipment (tents, tarps, stoves, cooking equipment), make sure it makes it to this campout even if you aren’t attending.  Call your patrol leader, if he doesn’t call you by Wednesday, April 14th.   Patrol Quartermasters must speak to the Troop Quartermaster, Greg Spies; quartermaster@bsatroop10.org 913-338-4354; if ANY additional equipment is needed (i.e. cooking grates, bricks, tent poles, tent pegs, tarps, tents) Paper goods & cups will not be provided.

 

*NOTE TO NEW SCOUTS (MUSTANG PATROL)

The Troop has a large stock of equipment we use on our campouts and other outings.  We provide: tents, ground cloths (tarps), cooking equipment, water coolers, propane lanterns, tables, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, first aid supplies & shelters.  We DO NOT provide tents or tarps for adults.  We also DO NOT provide: cups, plates, bowls, knives, forks or spoons.  Troop 10 has a policy about chairs: Only Adults & Eagle Scouts can use lawn chairs (with backs) on campouts.  Other scouts can use tripod type camp stools.  Adults are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

 

 

On this Campout, our new Scouts (Mustang Patrol) will be cooking their own Supper & Breakfast.  Troop 10 will purchase the necessary food and provide the needed cooking equipment.  Plenty of older Scout & Adult supervision will be provided.

Coordinating Patrol:        The coordinating patrol will be the Raptor Patrol.  The Raptor Patrol Scouts and ALL quartermasters are responsible to load the truck on Thursday, April 15th at 6:00pm and unload the troop truck on Sunday morning.

 

      Directions:                      From PSMS take Mission Road north to 135th Street.  135th Street west to 69 Hwy. South. Drive south on US 69 about 42 miles to State Highway 52; (52 is about 5 miles south of 152 which is the exit for LaCygne)  Turn left on Hwy. 52 and drive east towards Butler about 3.4 miles; just after the “Leaving Kansas” sign turn right onto gravel road (Stateline Road) and drive south about 2.1 miles; turn left onto gravel road (if you get to the Marias de Cygne river, you went too far); drive about 0.3 miles east and look for gate on the right (south) side of the road, just past the Illig’s lakes; turn right into gate - you are there!
