Scoutcraft Campout

June 4th & 5th, 2005

 

 

 

 

 

Location:              South Kansas City, Greg Spies Farm

 

Registration:    Please signup ASAP.  Signup at the Troop Meetings, or the Court of Honor May 23rd  with:     Greg Spies, quartermaster@bsatroop10.org 

                        DEADLINE:  May 31st

 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:              ALL 1st Year Scouts (even if not attending summer camp)

                                                Any interested adult, parent or leader, Instructors, Troop Guides

                                                Any older Scouts interested in helping our new Scouts

                                   

Schedule:  Meet at Prairie Star Middle School at 8:00am, Saturday, June 4th

                        Leave for campsite at 8:15am

                        Return home Sunday morning

 

activities:

Ø      First Year Scouts Patrol Cooking (1st Class Req. #4a-e)

a.            Plan a patrol menu for breakfast, lunch & supper

b.            Make a list of food costs and amounts to feed 3 people

c.            List pans, utensils and other gear needed to cook & serve these meals

d.            Consider safe food handling, storage & disposal

e.            Cook these 3 meals and serve to fellow scouts & adults

               Prepare fire & perform cleanup

Ø      Lashing of useful camp object

Ø      Proper flag raising/lowering etiquette

Ø      Identify 10 plants

Ø      Identify signs of 10 types of animals

Ø      Orienteering Skills

·                          Bring compass

Ø      First Aid requirements for rank advancement

·                          Prepare & bring first aid kit

Ø      Other scoutcraft skills for rank advancement

·                          Bring Scout Handbook

Ø      Environmental Science Merit Badge prerequisite work

·                          Bring an empty, clean 2 liter soda bottle for terrarium

·                          Pen & Paper

·                          Merit Badge Book

Ø      Campfire

·                          Discuss Scout Camp & answer questions

 

 

 

Food/Cooking:   1st Year Scouts will plan and cook all meals.  Each 1st Year Scout will act as his own patrol and is responsible to plan and provide all necessary food, recipes, cooking utensils and other ingredients to cook three hot meals for 3 people: themselves, an adult & an older Scout.  (refer to 1st Class Req. #4a-e )

 

 

 

Equipment Needed:

 (consult your Scout Handbook for a complete list)

Ø   Weather appropriate clothing, extra dry clothing to change into at night

Ø   Sturdy Boots or shoes & extra pair shoes.

Ø   Sleeping Bag – Ground Mat

Ø   Mess Kit (bowl, plate, insulated cup, knife, fork, spoon)

Ø   Rain Gear

Ø   Canteen or water bottle

Ø   Bug Spray, Suntan Lotion & Hat

Ø   Flashlight

Ø   Cooking Utensils needed

Ø Food for all meals, menus, food costs lists

Ø   Meals will be cooked on open pit fires

·  Plenty of firewood is available

·  If you plan on using charcoal

NO LIGHTER FLUID OR MATCHLIGHT

The Troop has charcoal starter chimneys

Plan on having charcoal & newspaper

Ø   Metal Cooking Grate (the troop has a only a few)

Ø   Compass

Ø   2 Liter soda bottle – empty & clean

Ø   Environmental Science Merit Badge Book

Ø   First Aid Kit

Ø   Toilet Paper

Ø   Patrol tents & tarps – Mr. Spies will have these available at campsite.

(The Troop does not provide these for Adults)

Ø   SCOUT HANDBOOK (pen & paper)

 

 

 

Cost:            FREE  (except food costs)

 

TRUCK LOADING:              One of the dads of a First Year Scout will need to drive the troop truck to and from the campout.  Please contact Greg Spies to volunteer.  ALL First Year Scouts are responsible to load the truck on Friday, June 3rd at 6:00pm and unload the troop truck on Sunday morning. 

                                    Meet at Troop 10 Storage Locker at 133rd & Holmes Road in Martin City.

 

Directions:                   Take 135th Street east until it turns into Hwy. 150 just past Stateline Road.  Continue on Hwy 150 east and turn right (south) on Holmes Road.  Take Holmes Road south to 195th Street.  Turn left (east) on 195th Street.  Take 195th 3.2 miles until it ends.  You will be at the campsite.
