Real Action To Fight Drug Crime.
April 29, 2008

Few threats worry parents more than the increasing presence of drugs among Canadian youth.

The Conservative Government has launched a national advertising campaign to educate parents about the risks of drugs, so they can help their kids make smart and safe choices. This is the latest example of the Conservative Government’s commitment to crack down on drug crime in all of its forms.

The Conservative Government is tackling the illegal drug trade with tougher border controls, new laws which promise severe mandatory jail time for anyone who is caught producing or selling illegal drugs and more money allocated for police to locate and eliminate grow-ops, meth labs and other drug producers that are infecting Canadian neighborhoods.

By doing so, the Conservative Government is sending a message to drug producers, drug smugglers, and drug pushers: the days of government turning a Liberal blind eye to drug crime are over. You will be caught, you will be convicted, and you will spend a long time behind bars.

The Liberal Party chose to take a very different approach to drug crime. For 13 years, past Liberal governments failed to deliver. Instead they made it easier for people to abuse the system and put hard working families at risk. The Liberals sent the wrong message to young people by taking a lax approach to drugs, including a proposal to decriminalize marijuana.

Powerful Liberal Senator Terry Mercer best summed up the Liberal approach to drugs when he boasted that thanks to their lax laws "we’re going to become a very big Holland here".

When it comes to doing what is right for Canada’s youth, the choice is clear. The Stéphane Dion Liberals have a record of turning a blind eye to criminal gangs and drug pushers. Only Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Government are delivering real results, and our top priority is cracking down on drug crime so we can protect hardworking families.
